The Hibiscus Print symbolises peace and origin. The flower that inspired it all was
found in Phokeng, Rustenburg, where Neo’s family is rooted. Upon a walk around the
village, appreciating the culture that raised her, she noticed the beauty of it in a
neighbour’s yard. Amidst dusty roads and shades of clay brown, ‘Rusty-Dusty’ as it is
called, came this eye-catching flower in bloom. The statement was clear – you can
bloom in unexpected places. Hibiscus is often used to create calmness and combat
stress related diseases like high-blood pressure; and as a tea lover, the connection
couldn’t have been any clearer. Neo took this to say that the process of blooming
should be marked by peace, not pressure. The importance of self-acceptance (where
you are from and how you are made) and acknowledging one’s beauty in spite of, is
highlighted in this print. With childlike lines and bold border lines, Neo used her
conviction to embrace imperfection to depict the hibiscus flower that took her by
surprise.
